Apsara Dance Performance, The ethereal dance of the ancients

Classical dancing in Cambodia has many forms through its own highly stylized art form. One of the best stylized is Apsara Dance Performance which once confined mainly to the courts of the Royal Palace and performed by females. In the name of Khmer called Robam Apsara, this classical dance form are often referring to Apsara Dance Performance.


In the 1960s, Apsara Dance Performance was first introduced to outside world as the Khmer Royal Ballet. A daughter of King Norodom Sihanouk, Princess Norodom Bopha Devi who was the first royal ballerina. 


The Apsara Dance is particularly inspired by the style from around more than a thousand women carvings in the Angkor temple complex. As evidenced in part by these Apsara, this performance has been a part of the Khmer culture for more than a millennium.
